Harani caught in the act

CHAPTER 14 –

TO ASGARD AS

STOWAWAYS

As per instructions received from Freya via Brokkr,

the Chief of Globus II,

Mr. Armbjorg Jegrehad, ensured that

two of the top-most crates stacked behind the building

and ready to be lifted off the next day, had their wooden lids

kept partially open.

So when Manikkam and Harani

were closely examining the crates for hiding themselves

within them, it didn't take much time for them

to locate the dislodged covers on the two crates.

For the past week, Harani and Manikkam had been discussing between themselves about the mystery of the wooden crates being carried away in nighttime.

“Why not during daytime? Why only in the middle of the night?” Harani asked Manikkam. “Something fishy is going on.”

“And what exactly is inside those crates?” was Manikkam's question. “It's obviously something those mechanics are producing in the maintenance facility here and sending somewhere!”

“And where are they being taken to?” Harani was repeatedly asking.

“All with the knowledge and approval of Mr. Jegre,” Harani added. “And he is personally overseeing the airlift of the goods. Must be of some great importance and value!”

So they had decided to find out for themselves what was actually going on. They had discussed in length all the possible ways to get to the bottom of this mysterious affair, and the best method seemed to be to hide themselves inside the crates and travel with them to whatever destination they were being taken to.

Once inside the crates and after a seemingly endless wait lying flat within, both could hear the sound of an approaching aircraft, which after a while seemed to steady itself by hovering directly above them.

This time, the noise from the aircraft was much different. There was a heavy whirling of a helicopter rotor, not the silence of the space machine they saw last time.

“Must be one of the heavy transport helicopters,” Harani thought to herself. “Quite a large number of crates this time.”

They could also hear a couple of human voices, and one of them from the ground level was clearly that of Mr. Jegre.

Soon they could feel the crates in which they were hiding being slowly lifted up, accompanied by the uneasy feeling of swinging from side to side when going up in the air. After a short while, they could feel the sense of their individual crates being laid on a flat surface—they knew that it was the floor of the aircraft.

Lying inside the crates, Harani and Manikkam could sense that their backs were pressing painfully hard against some really sharp and uneven metal parts, like plates and rods.

Once the aircraft was in flight, somewhere up in the air, Harani was curious to see for herself what else was inside the aircraft. She gently nudged aside the wooden cover to raise her head and peep from the inside of the wooden box.

Inside, it was indeed a big machine, almost one hundred feet long and fifteen feet wide, with the wooden crates all stacked from the front to the rear ends. Must be one of those Mi-26Ts, Harani thought to herself, which can carry twenty tons.
